The Split Rock of Horeb
The Split Rock of Horeb is Located to the north of Jabal Lawz. This structure is a 60+ foot tall rock that is situated on a large hill. This hill and giant rock was pushed by the formation of a water fissure. At some point this structure erupted with water quickly forming a small lake. It is unclear when or how long this water flowed but the evidence on the ground still shows the reminisce of a lakebed. When the water burst forth it split this rock and the divisions and channels were still there. It is also important to note that it is a very old structure and there is some wind damage but the majority of the erosion was caused by quickly moving water.
This unique structure that visibly sticks out is unlike anything else in that area which makes it fitting when God says to Moses, Exodus 17:6 “Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb…” Moses would have known exactly which rock God was referring to as Moses would have spent time in this area as a Sheppard and would have known about such a strange large boulder at the top of a large hill. Also knowing that this location experiences an eruption of water we can then match that with what we read in Exodus 17:6 “…you (Moses) shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” Furthermore, matching what we read about this place, this area is very isolated and known to not be a region that has a lot of water. In Exodus 17:1-2 it says, “Then all the congregation of the children of Israel set out on their journey from the Wilderness of Sin, according to the commandment of YHVH, and camped in Rephidim; but there was no water for the people to drink. Therefore, the people contended with Moses, and said, “Give us water, that we may drink.” This detail is very important to the validity of this location as we do not find any oasis or available water sources nearby.
The location of this site is near the location of the Amalekites to the northeast. Biblically pairing there would need to be appropriate proximity to the Amalekites so that they would be able to come and attack the Israelites. The location of this rock fits the description of the Amalekites coming in from behind and attacking moving in from the north. It makes sense for the Amalekites to then turn their attention to the Israelites in this area. As the area does not have a lot of water, having and controlling a water source in this region would be very powerful and even life or death for a people. The Split Rock location is not far from Mount Sinai which is fitting with the order of events in the Bible.
