Tayyib al Ism Oasis (Elim of the Bible)

Elim Tayyib al Ism Oasis is an oasis along the Northern route of the Exodus. This location is in a wadi that leads to the sea. The importance of this oasis is the Israelites would have travelled from oasis to oasis due to the necessity and scarcity of water. This location has the tradition of Moses coming through wadi. In the bible it describes the Israelites coming to a place that had palm trees and wells, Exodus 15:27 “Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees; so they camped there by the waters.”

It is most intriguing that at this oasis there is a plethora of palm trees and exactly 12 wells. These wells are modern wells; however, it is thought that these wells could have been built over existing ancient wells. There is an abundance of Midianite pottery located near these wells that dates these wells to the time of Moses. If this is not the location of Elim, it is certainly a place that Moses would have come through prior to the Exodus, as this is a route from Midian to the Red Sea. Within the wadi from this location there are many oases along the way making the likelihood that Moses came through this location highly likely.
