The Cemetery

This cemetery is located approximately 5 miles away from the base of Mount Sinai in Wadi al-Abyad. It is located along the North path the Israelites would have travelled coming from the split rock. The cemetery is located at the base of some smaller mountains that connect to the Northern part of Jabal Lawz. It is commonly referred to as a megalithic site which simply means large old stones. The cemetery is very large and is roughly the size of 5 football fields. And it has been confirmed to be a mass burial site as human remains have been confirmed.

It appears that the people buried at this site were all buried at about the same time, being a single cause event. Due to the worship of the Golden Calf, it says in the Bible, Exodus 32:27-28 “And he said to them, “Thus says YHVH God of Israel: ‘Let every man put his sword on his side, and go in and out from entrance to entrance throughout the camp, and let every man kill his brother, every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.”” So, the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And about three thousand men of the people fell that day.” Furthermore, a plague broke out, Exodus 32:35 “So the LORD plagued the people because of what they did with the calf which Aaron made.”

This cemetery has some interesting features that are unique when compared to desert burials from this region. Typical burials for desert people were piles of rocks in a circle form or mound. That is not what is found at this location. What is found is standing stones. A story that the Israelites would have been familiar with is their ancestor Jacob erecting a standing stone at the grave of Rebecca, Genesis 35:20 “And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day.” Also there are stone placements in the shapes of decoration and walking paths. Another most curious find along with these burials is grinding stones and grinding stone bases. These were left behind with the people who were buried at this location. Could this be the tools used to grind the manna? Why did they leave these behind with the buried ones? Were these considered unclean due to the plague that broke out in the camp?
