Throughout the area at the base of Mount Sinai and the encampment plain there is evidence of red paintings and or the remnants of red paintings. Many of these remains are heavily weathered, however they once depicted paintings of people and animals. At Aarons Altar (also known as the Golden Calf Altar) there is a boulder overhang that still contains red paintings of Egyptian style bulls.

Located at the base of Mount Sinai in the neighboring canyon to the north still at the base of Jabal Laws there is one of the most important paintings found, which is the archers. There are boulders that are protected from the weather that contain depictions of archers. In the bible God told Moses to protect the mountain and not allow animals or humans to set foot on the mountain. Exodus 19:11-13 “And let them be ready for the third day. For on the third day YHVH will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves that you do not go up to the mountain or touch its base. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. Not a hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot with an arrow; whether man or beast, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come near the mountain.”

The instruction was to shoot whatever tried to get on the mountain. So, it stands to reason that Moses would have put up archers around the mountain to make sure no one got onto the mountain. There is the possibility that the archers themselves painted these while they were standing guard of the mountain. And also these paintings could have either been a commemoration for those archers being placed at the base of the mountain or these paintings could have been the world’s oldest no trespassing signs. Either way the archer paintings are at the completely perfect location to match the biblical narrative. There are still a lot of areas that have not been explored so the potential of finding more paintings is quite high.
